Century for Samson, eight-fer for Guleria in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023

Group A

Kerala lost by 18 runs to Railways in Bengaluru, despite a composed century from skipper Sanju Samson (128 off 139). Kerala’s sole meaningful stand was Samson’s 138-run partnership with Shreyas Gopal (53 off 63). Railways’ top-scorer was Sahab Yuvraj (121 off 136) whose knock gave them a good total.

Odisha stunned Mumbai with 86 runs in a low-scoring game in Alur thanks to a strong team effort. Odisha’s total of 199 appeared to be inadequate on a difficult surface. Kartik Biswal’s fifty was the highest score in Odisha’s total, and their bowlers all contributed to make the score appear much higher than it was. Only four Mumbai batsmen reached double figures, and only one of those went over 20.

Group B

In Jaipur, Maharashtra easily defeated Manipur by 167 runs. Ankit Bawne hit a century, and three other Maharashtra hitters went over 50 in the team’s 427-run total. The outcome was obvious by the halfway point, but Manipur’s hitters fought hard to bat out the 50 overs. Three of them also got fifties, but the margin of defeat remained enormous.

In Group B, Hyderabad defeated Meghalaya by nine wickets with 188 balls remaining. Kartikeya Kak’s five-fer led Hyderabad’s assault as they defeated Meghalaya for 158. The Hyderabad hitters then cruised to victory owing to Gahlaut Rahul Singh’s 56-ball 105, which included ten fours and seven sixes.

Group C

Karnataka brushed Mizoram aside by six wickets in Ahmedabad. Vasuki Koushik took four wickets, while Krishnappa Gowtham took three to restrict Mizoram to a modest total. Mayank Agarwal, Manish Pandey, and Manoj Bhandage then flung their bats around in pursuit of a quick finish, and Karnataka won with 197 balls to spare.

Ayush Badoni’s 97-ball 87 was in vain as Delhi was defeated by Uttarakhand in Ahmedabad. The Delhi batting collapsed when chasing a low goal of 222, with no assistance for Badoni as the innings crumbled. Previously, Uttarakhand had only reached a decent total owing to fifties from Avneesh Sudha and Aditya Tare.

Group D

Gujarat beat Himachal Pradesh by eight runs in a high-scoring encounter at Chandigarh. Urvil Patel’s century and his double century opening stand with Priyank Panchal set the stage for a competitive total, but Arpit Guleria’s incredible eight-wicket haul brought Himachal back into contention. Gujarat were reduced to 327 from a possible 350-plus score by his spell, but it was enough for them. Prashant Chopra and Sumeet Verma kept the chase going with massive fifties, but they came up just short in the end.

At Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh thrashed Arunachal Pradesh by eight wickets in a lopsided match. To restrict the opposition to a meagre total, Ankit Rajpoor, Yash Dayal, Shiva Singh, and captain Nitish Rana split the ten wickets among themselves. The game was ended with 219 balls remaining when Uttar Pradesh swiftly completed the chase, led by Aryan Juyal’s 42-ball 58.

Group E

Bengal defeated Punjab by 52 runs in a high-profile match at Thane, thanks to Anustup Majumdar’s century and a good bowling performance. Apart from Majumdar, there was a precious fifty-fifty down the order from Karan Lal, who was important in bringing the total up to competitive levels. Bengal’s bowling was relentless, with no Punjab batsman scoring more than 35 runs.
