Dravid’s contract was extended till June and will be evaluated after the T20 World Cup.
Rahul Dravid’s contract as India’s head coach has been extended until the end of the Twenty20 World Cup, effective immediately. He will travel to South Africa with the Twenty20 team, possibly as early as December 5.
Sources involved with the recent conversations between Dravid and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have revealed the length of the extension. Dravid has been notified that his contract will be reviewed following the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States.
The T20 World Cup is slated to start on June 3 and run through June 30. Dravid’s extended term will therefore expire at the end of June. For present, it is anticipated that other support staff members will be subject to similar restrictions.
The BCCI was always certain that the extension would happen, especially after India’s excellent World Cup performance, in which they displayed a unique style of cricket. The main concern was getting Dravid’s approval.
Dravid was regarded to be a reluctant coach who needed some convincing at first. While Dravid may decline an extension after the Twenty20 World Cup, members of his support staff may be considered for more extensions. For the time being, the BCCI has bought some time in this subject.
Tomorrow’s meeting of the Selection Committee
On Thursday, the selection committee will meet to finalize the squads for the upcoming South Africa series. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday morning in Delhi, with Ajit Agarkar’s committee expected to select teams for all formats (T20Is, ODIs, and Tests). From December 10 to January 7, India will play three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests.
With a few exceptions, it is likely that the majority of players from the current T20I side that is playing against Australia will be retained for the shortest format, and the majority of players who played in the World Cup will find a place in the ODI side. There have been rumors that Virat Kohli may skip the ODIs, which appear to be true, but sources close to him have denied this.
The leadership for the ODI side is not clear, and it remains uncertain whether Rohit Sharma will lead; there is a possibility that he might opt out. However, Rohit is expected to lead in the two Tests in India. Currently, the captain is overseas and was unavailable for comment.
